"The Warning"

In 1907, T.R. signed the order that dishonorably discharged 167 soldiers of the 25th Infantry. This all black unit was stationed in Brownsville, Texas, and some of its members were accused of engaging in a random shooting which resulted in one resident's death. Despite the looming election of 1908, and even though no incriminating evidence was found by the special investigatory commission, T.R. was convinced the accused were guilty.
